Why Is My Washer Shaking Violently? Common Causes and What To Do
A washing machine that shakes, bangs, or walks across the floor during a spin cycle is more than annoying — it can damage your floors, loosen water connections, and wear out internal components faster than normal. If your washer has started shaking more than usual, here’s what’s likely going on and when it makes sense to call for help.
The Load Is Unbalanced
The most common reason for violent shaking is an unbalanced load. A single heavy item like a comforter or a pair of jeans can shift to one side during the spin cycle and cause the drum to wobble. Try opening the lid, redistributing the clothes evenly, and running the spin cycle again. Front-loaders are especially sensitive to this — always mix large and small items together rather than washing one large item alone.
The Machine Isn’t Level
Washers have adjustable feet for a reason. If the floor beneath your machine is uneven, or if the feet have shifted over time, the washer won’t sit flat and will rock during the spin. Place a level on top of the machine and adjust the feet until all four corners sit firmly on the floor. Many models have self-locking nuts on the feet that you tighten after leveling.
Worn Drum Bearings
If you hear a loud rumbling or grinding sound along with the shaking, worn drum bearings are often the cause. Bearings allow the drum to spin smoothly, and when they wear out the drum wobbles and creates vibration that travels through the entire machine. Bearing replacement is a job for a technician — it involves disassembling a significant portion of the washer.
Broken or Worn Shock Absorbers
Front-load washers use shock absorbers to dampen drum movement during the spin cycle. When one or more of these wear out or break, the drum bounces hard against the cabinet. You’ll often notice the problem getting worse over time, with the machine moving several inches across the floor during a heavy load. Replacing shock absorbers is a straightforward repair that restores normal operation.
Damaged Suspension Springs
Top-load washers suspend the inner tub from the cabinet using springs. If one or more springs breaks or stretches, the tub hangs unevenly and shakes violently when spinning. You may be able to see a spring hanging loose if you open the lid and look inside — though full diagnosis typically requires opening the cabinet.
When To Call a Technician
If leveling the machine and redistributing loads doesn’t solve the shaking, the problem is almost certainly mechanical. Running the washer in this condition risks water line connections loosening, the machine falling over, or further damage to the drum and cabinet. Our team handles washer repair in Yakima including bearing replacement, shock absorber repairs, and suspension spring replacement — usually completed in a single visit. If the shaking started recently and is getting progressively worse, it’s worth getting it checked before the repair becomes more involved.
