Why Your Washer Won’t Drain
A washing machine that finishes a cycle with standing water still in the drum has a drainage problem. In Yakima, hard water (15–20 GPG) is a common accelerant — mineral deposits and lint accumulate in pump filters and hose bends faster than in softer-water areas, gradually restricting flow until the pump can’t clear the drum.
We diagnose drainage failures in-home across Yakima and the surrounding valley. Most drain repairs are completed same-visit because the parts involved are among the most common we carry.
Common Causes
We diagnose before quoting — here’s what we typically find:
Front-load and many top-load washers have a pump filter that catches coins, lint, and debris. When it’s blocked, the pump can’t pull water through. Cleaning or replacing the filter often resolves drainage immediately. Mineral scale from local hard water accelerates clogging.
A kinked, pinched, or clogged drain hose will prevent water from reaching the standpipe. We check the hose route from the pump to the wall, looking for bends, blockages, or internal buildup.
If the pump filter is clear and the hose is open but the machine still won’t drain, the drain pump itself may have failed. We test pump operation and replace if needed.
Some machines won’t drain if they don’t register the door or lid as properly closed. A faulty latch can also interrupt mid-cycle drainage.
In rare cases, the electronic control board fails to signal the drain pump to activate. We test electrical signals before concluding a board is at fault.
Small items — coins, socks, bra underwires — can get past the filter and jam the drain pump impeller. We access and clear the pump if an obstruction is suspected.

📞 (509) 357-9598Questions & Answers
Why does local hard water cause drainage problems? +
At 15–20 GPG, Yakima water deposits mineral scale inside hoses, pump filters, and inlet screens over time. This gradually restricts flow and puts extra strain on the drain pump, leading to failures sooner than in softer-water regions.
Can I drain the washer myself before the repair? +
Yes — most front-loaders have a small drain hose near the pump filter access panel at the bottom front. Place a shallow pan underneath, open the small hose, and let it drain slowly. Don’t force the drum.
How quickly can you come for a washer not draining in Yakima? +
Same-day and next-day appointments are often available. Call (509) 357-9598 first thing in the morning for the best chance of same-day service.
Is a washer not draining expensive to fix? +
Drain pump filter clogs are inexpensive to address. A failed drain pump is a moderate repair. We diagnose first and give you the price before any work starts.
